I wonder, if the families will ever laugh again. Smile again. Have some trivial pleasure that brings joy. It’s difficult to imagine any of that. It’s difficult to imagine they any of them—that long list survivors—will allow themselves that as time passes. The memory will not fade for them: the terror and guilt any perceived forgetting will prevent that for the rest of their lives. It’s a perpetual sadness that goes beyond the acceptance of loss that everyone carries. It’s always beneath the surface.
But what about the rest? They have already forgotten and are already full of trivial pleasures, political fundraising and other mindless pursuits.
