08 January 2024 | I Will Not Help (White) Women
You’ve been in this situation, certainly: you pull into a grocery store lot and immediately spot the person who is asking for money or has a petition in hand. You know you’re going to be running a gauntlet to get in and out without being bothered.
I’m not always successful when this happens. I exit the store, head whipping left and right to locate where the panhandler or petition signer is in relation to my car and all sorts of geometry goes off in my head. Will that person see me from this angle as I head to my vehicle? Should it be a straight line or, like prey trying to elude capture, do I zigzag it all the way there?
Alas, the last time I tried to avoid a petition signer was futile. As I tried to get my bags into the trunk, she caught me, approached her target and asked if I wanted to sign a petition about abortion rights in my state. Trapped. I sighed loudly and agreed to sign it. As I am writing my name, she feels the need to pipe in, “You’ll be helping women.”
That’s when I wanted to stop. That’s when I wanted to hand back the petition and ask her, “Why should I help white women? Why should I bother when you had your chance in 2016 and you failed so goddamn miserably?”
As a group, white women voted for Trump (hereafter known as P01135809) in larger numbers than they did for Hillary Clinton. And the reward for that was getting not one, not two, but *three* Supreme Court justices confirmed. Three people who lied their asses off during confirmation hearings about Roe v Wade being “settled law” and then proceeded to overturn it at the first chance.
Oh, but it gets better, I wanted to tell her. White women voted in even *larger* numbers for P01135809 over Biden. They wanted four more years of the incompetence, the lying and the abuse of power. (And now it turns out, they would have voted for a rapist. ) If he had succeeded to get a second term, I would have loved to see the faces of these women when the Supreme Court officially took away a woman’s right to an abortion in the summer of 2022. You know that P01135809 would have been crowing about it that would have somehow been worse than the actual dismantling of the law itself. (Update: he *has* been crowing about it but it’s Biden is being blamed by the Left for it.)
So, why should I help white women at all? As a group, they flatly rejected the warnings of Hillary Clinton and watched as their 50-year old Constitutional right was stripped from them. To my mind, it’s just deserts.
But, I kept my mouth shut. I didn’t say anything. I bit my tongue and signed the petition and went about my way. My would-be negative response would have been the least of her problems, because odds are, American women will not be getting back that right for the rest of the lives of this current generation.
