IN LOCO ESSE

29 June 2009 | Gilad Shalit

Gilad Shalit has been held hostage for three years.

He was captured by Hamas and has been held in the Gaza Strip for three, long years.

Where is the outrage? Where are the demands from European letists that Shalit needs to be released? We've heard the long howls and hatred from the Europeans about Israel's attack on Gaza earlier this year. We are all familiar with the phrase "disproportionate response." What is the excuse for giving a pass to Hamas?

Is it because Shalit is a soldier? Probably, and we all know that we lower the bar for soldiers because they are expendable. Even more so for Israeli soldiers who are nothing more than evil dupes carrying out the will of the Nazi state of Israel. So therefore, no fuss, no muss: Shalit deserves what he gets.

It's agonizing to watch the drama of his fate unfold like so much grass growing. His parents have been on a roller coaster ride for three years while the politicians in Jerusalem have sworn to bring him home but deal after deal either falls through, never was, or some convenient wrinkle comes up.

And what of Hamas? It's a fact that Israel will do everything to retrieve its soldiers, and Hamas will use this to their full advantage. Want Shalit back? Fine, give us 10,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange. Holding an Israeli soldier is a strategic exercise for them: a means to and end.

But for the Europeans who are enamored of Hamas and want to paint Israel as the agressor in just about everything, why aren't they pressuring Hamas (even if indirectly) to release Shalit? Where's the demands that Hamas (as the duly elected representatives of the Palestinian people) stop acting like a terrorist organization and start behaving like a legitimate political and social party?

The answer is simple: Gilad Shalit is a fascist soldier in the fascist army of the fascist state of Israel and as such, he deserves it. The Europeans don't care; that's why they hold Israel to such a double standard and will merely shrug if Shalit dies or his capture is prolonged even further. I'm surprised a European court hasn't decided to charge Shalit with some crime against humanity just for having been in the Israeli army.

So much for honest brokers.Click to share this post on Twitter  Click to share this post on Facebook  Share on Tumblr
