IN LOCO ESSE

12 June 2016 | Just Please Shut Up

I don't know why, but I am just astonished at the level of hatred and insipid bullshit that is occurring on social media because of the mass murder in Orlando. White liberals are rushing to defend Islam and pointing towards a would-be gunman from Indiana (stopped by police before the commencement of gay pride parade in California) is probably a Christian terrorist in the making (with no proof) and lecturing everyone about gun control.

Unless someone can provide me with the raw data of the number of Catholic men, for example, who are becoming radicalized, swearing allegiance to the Vatican and rushing off to some group, somewhere, the "what about Christians?" counter cry is tiresome and has no legitimacy. That said, I don't need President Obama to utter the magical phrase of "radical Islam" in order for me to figure out that it's a problem, any more than I need him to tell me that water is wet. I can easily make the distinction between young Muslim men who are radicalized think ISIS is awesome from those who aren't. But it's former who are making life tougher for the latter, and that has nothing to do with me, nor am I obligated to defend Islam at the expense of Christianity.

Along those lines, I'm getting tired of the feeble, indefensible arguments for why Muslim men (and women) are getting radicalized. No, it's not strictly because they are poor, easily manipulated, gullible, desperate and under-educated. No, it's not just strictly U.S. foreign policy or support for Israel. And no, it's not a deeply flawed interpretation of Islam, the go-to response of white, liberal Islam-defenders as if they have intimate knowledge of what they speak. All of the excuse-making is exasperating. I don't know why young Muslim men would want to join ISIS or kill fellow Americans on behalf of ISIS any more than I would understand young Hispanic men in the United States wanting to join the Zetas drug cartel. (You never hear of that kind of radicalization, but anyway...)

There were two extremists who wanted to kill lots of people this weekend; only one of them managed to do so. As far as I'm concerned, they're two assholes who wanted to and did kill my fellow countrymen. How this basic fact seems to elude everyone in the race to place blame here, there and everywhere in between while hectoring everyone with their own Twitter sloganeering, isn't doing anyone any good. Does anyone have the slightest understanding of what the word "empathy" is?

Apparently not.
