I’ve gone two whole months without making an entry, and you know what? Not much has changed.
We continue to reach the type of milestones in our Iraqi Expeditions that neither bring us relief nor clarity of purpose. We have now reached over 1,700 military deaths and there seems to be no end in sight. The media has started telling us about the number of “insurgents” killed, as though that is supposed to make us feel better. And according this article, an enemy body count is exactly the same tactic the military used in Vietnam, and we know how that ended.
Since we’re so into numbers now, it’s worth noting that close to 1,000 Iraqi civilians have died since the "historic" elections in Iraq. Not that anyone really cares, of course, because we Americans have never really been into civilian deaths, and tend to pause quietly for a moment and tell ourselves that every war as casualties that we can’t stop. Too bad, so sad, time to change the channel and watch this week’s installment of “Nanny 911.” Besides, too much war coverage is depressing and might prevent us from going to the mall and getting into more credit card, and we can’t have that.
Seventeen hundred military deaths and a seemingly endless supply of suicide bombers; more money swirling down the drain and an exit looking more like a fabled Arabian desert mirage. The poll numbers in America suggest that people are growing tired of our Iraqi Expedition, but in keeping with our hands off policy, we don’t seem to be doing too much to force an explanation out of the neocon bastards who got us into this mess. Even when confronted with evidence that the hardon for war was waving as early as July 2002, we haven’t been pissed off enough to actually do something about it.
More blood, more death, more destruction. And it’s only the beginning of summer.
